Started Joint Research with Kumamoto University on Automated Planning for VMAT in Esophageal Cancer Treatment
In April 2025, AiRato Inc. (hereafter “AiRato”) and the Faculty of Life Sciences at Kumamoto University (hereafter “Kumamoto University”) initiated a joint research project focused on the automated planning of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for esophageal cancer patients.

Research Overview
This project aims to develop AI technology capable of automatically generating radiation therapy plans for patients with esophageal cancer who are eligible for radiotherapy. The ultimate goal is to implement this technology in society through AI-based treatment planning support software.
What is VMAT?
VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy) is a highly precise form of radiation therapy that allows for efficient, high-accuracy irradiation by delivering radiation while rotating around the patient.
Research Significance and Vision
AiRato’s proprietary AI combines and analyzes a wide range of medical imaging data. By collaborating with Kumamoto University, which holds one of Japan’s leading collections of clinical data and expertise in esophageal cancer, the research team aims to develop an automated planning system that is truly practical and effective in clinical settings.
