AiRato Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Representative Director: Yuto Kimura, hereinafter referred to as “AiRato”) and Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University Hospital (Location: Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Hospital Director: Kenichi Sato, hereinafter referred to as “Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University”) have started joint research on “automated planning for head and neck cancer in radiation therapy” from October 2024.

○Comment from Hospital Director Kenichi Sato

I have high hopes that this joint research will lead to groundbreaking technological innovations in radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, enabling us to provide many patients with high-quality cancer treatment that is comparable to that provided by experienced doctors, efficiently and uniformly.

Research content and objectives

In this study, we will develop technology that can automatically create radiation therapy plans on CT images by analyzing the distribution of radiation therapy plans using AI for head and neck cancer patients who are suitable for radiation therapy (Figure 1). In the future, we aim to implement this technology in society as AI-based radiation therapy planning support software.

This research is being carried out with the support of Sendai City’s FY2024 Advanced Technology and Data Utilization Use Case Creation Support Project.

Research characteristics and prospects

AiRato’s proprietary AI combines various radiological images for AI analysis, and by conducting joint research with Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University Hospital, which has some of the best clinical data and clinical trials in Japan, we aim to develop an automated treatment planning AI for radiation therapy that can be truly utilized in clinical settings.
